2026-05-12

Jakarta (ANTARA)Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said on Monday that the Indonesian government is preparing to develop a policy on sugar content labeling for food and beverages and plans to establish a food safety working group.
Hasan stated that the policy was discussed at a meeting in Jakarta, which also marked the initial discussion of implementing Government Regulation (PP) No. 1 on food safety in 2026.
Hasan stated after the meeting, "The report shows that many young people already have diabetes."
He said that concerns have been raised about sugar consumption against the backdrop of rising cases of non-communicable diseases, including among younger people.
To address this issue, the government plans to form an inter-departmental and inter-agency task force to develop a sugar content labeling scheme for food and beverages to raise public awareness.
The meeting also agreed to establish food safety working groups at the central and local levels to respond more quickly to food safety issues, including residue cases, contamination, and food safety emergencies.
Hasan stated that the working group will include relevant ministries and agencies, such as the National Police, the Ministry of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM).
The government also discussed the regulation of processed food products widely distributed in the community to ensure they comply with food safety regulations.
Hasan stated, "The standards for products that can circulate in our country, including halal and non-halal standards, will also be discussed."
BPOM Director Taruna Ikrar stated that the agency is coordinating the development of supporting regulations, including rules for labeling sugar, salt, and fat content or nutritional classification.
He said the regulation will be drafted based on international standards (including the Codex guidelines) and recommendations from the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and will be adapted to national circumstances.
The government stated that the labeling policy and working group aim to strengthen consumer protection, raise public awareness, and clarify food safety management mechanisms.
Government Regulation No. 1 of 2026 amends Government Regulation No. 86 of 2019 on food safety to strengthen the monitoring, coordination and response to evolving food safety risks.
