Thailand to be at the forefront of halal industry

2025-05-15

In Thailand, the halal industry was in its early stages, with a market value of approximately $1.29 billion, experiencing periods of growth and contraction. However, it is now growing again and is projected to reach $6 billion next year. Over the past 20 years, the number of halal-certified brands has grown from just a few hundred to 160,000, generating $6 billion in value through export markets alone, to countries around the world, including Muslims and non-Muslims.

Dr. Winai Dahlan of the American Medical Journal Association said, "Thailand needs to understand that halal is not only about the interests of Muslims, but also about everyone in the world."

Mr. Winai Dahlan, PhD, JAMA, founder and director of the Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University, said, "Ninety-five percent of people involved in the halal industry, from manufacturers, entrepreneurs, employees, and consumers, are non-Muslims. Therefore, the benefits of halal are not only the quality of food produced for Muslims, but also for everyone involved. We export our products to 57 Muslim-majority countries, as well as many in Europe and North America."

As the first country in the world to have its own Halal Science Center, Thailand now aims to become a leader in the halal industry. Three institutions are working tirelessly to change perspectives and elevate domestic halal standards. The Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University is dedicated to researching and developing halal products for Thailand, while the Pattani office focuses on production and entrepreneurship, such as promoting small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, industrial plants, and agriculture. Mai's office is responsible for big data, developing IT networks, and smart technologies, in line with Thailand 4.0. "Along the road from Jeddah to Mecca, there's a huge billboard displaying our logo and the slogan 'A logo you can trust,' which speaks to reliable branding," Dr. Winai added. "The Thai cabinet is currently developing a master plan using our concept."

The Center for Halal Science at Chulalongkorn University and the Ulema Council of Thailand are working to realize this vision. They will host the Thailand Halal Congress from November 30th to December 3rd, bringing together the global halal industry network. The event will include academic seminars, expert talks in related fields, business networking, and a convention on halal standards. The Halal International Expo, themed "Halal Wisdom: Fusion of Science, Technology, and Islamic Art," will feature over 260 booths showcasing thousands of halal products. The Thailand Halal Congress will be held at BITEC Bangna in Bangkok from November 30th to December 3rd, 2017. Please attend.
