ASEAN needs unified halal certification standards
2025-05-15

KUALA LUMPUR: To boost foreign trade among Southeast Asian nations, ASEAN needs a mutually recognised halal certification standard.
Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud, CEO of the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation, said that ASEAN countries are currently discussing the possibility of printing the JAKIM logo on halal certificates. JAKIM is still discussing this with ASEAN countries. We hope to reach an agreement soon.
Dzulkifli said maintaining consistency in halal certification within ASEAN would not only facilitate trade among member states, but also be applicable to non-ASEAN countries.
On another point, Dzulkifli said the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation hopes that JAKIM can speed up the time it takes for companies to obtain halal certification to promote local trade exports.
“We hope that local manufacturers will produce products using international standards and obtain Halal certification, which will greatly enhance their market competitiveness.”
