Pakistan: Most Pakistanis eat non-halal meat.

Pakistani government officials in Lahore (online) stated that approximately 90 percent of Pakistanis unknowingly consume non-halal meat, believing it to be halal. They pointed out that many animals are not slaughtered according to halal methods and therefore do not meet halal standards. Only one slaughterhouse, Shapur Kangran, operates in full compliance with halal standards.

The Pakistan Halal Products Development Board (PHPDB), Punjab Islamic Development Authority (PHDA), Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) and Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC) stated that the general public is unaware of the requirements of halal laws because the Halal law was enshrined in the Constitution in 1973, leading them to believe that they are eating halal food when in fact it is not.

"Most of the butchers are unaware of the halal slaughtering procedures - the rituals that should be performed before and after slaughtering the animals. They just slaughter the animals and serve mutton, beef and chicken, which is not halal food," an official said.

At the same time, some foods that are banned in other Muslim countries are being used in other industries (including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and chemicals) under halal standards, which allows them to get away with it.
