The New Zealand meat industry, which received the Best Service Provider Award at the 6th World Halal Forum in Malaysia, is poised for significant growth. This award will undoubtedly strengthen the New Zealand halal meat industry's market position and increase confidence in the Muslim market. This is a truly beneficial and multi-million dollar achievement for the New Zealand meat industry. It is the first time a non-Muslim country has won this award.
Dr. Zohrab said the award is very important in Malaysia and there will be a lot of media coverage of the event. Principal Advisor for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Wade Armstrong, is also optimistic that the industry will grow further.
New Zealand sets up government system for halal food"It's a big step to set up a government system for halal food in New Zealand. Even Muslim countries don't have that," said Taoufik Elidrissi, director of the New Zealand Halal Development Training Council. The system, which began on March 3 last year, redefines halal meat production and certification in New Zealand, overseeing the standards in place to ensure meat is prepared in the way prescribed by Islamic law.
Mr Elidrissi said halal food exports formed a significant portion of New Zealand's dairy and meat exports and New Zealand had to develop its halal system to meet the requirements of the Muslim world.
The global halal food market is worth US$150 billion annually. If both food and non-food products are included, the market value is US$210 billion. This is a very large figure and a very large market for Southeast Asia and China.
