Over the past two years, plant-based food consumption has grown by 49% across the EU, reaching a total sales volume of €3.6 billion.
Asia warmly welcomes Halal beef
2025-05-15
In most Muslim countries, halal certification is mandatory for imported products. Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia require documentation proving their halal status before entry. Furthermore, a significant number of Muslims live as minorities in non-Muslim countries, such as the United States and Canada. Some buyers also require companies to provide halal certification to ensure that local consumers have access to halal products. Halal beef is one of the fastest-growing U.S. beef exports. Halal-certified products are exported to most markets in the Middle East, as well as Indonesia and Malaysia. Halal-certified beef is also becoming increasingly popular in some regions, not because imports require halal certification, but rather due to consumer preference.
Halal beef is popular in Asia
Sabrina Xian, director of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), covers the ASEAN region in Southeast Asia. USMEF's overseas markets include Indonesia and Malaysia, where halal certification is strictly required. In her audio report, she discussed the demand for halal beef. Is it not due to imports? For example, Singapore, with its growing Muslim population, attracts many tourists from the Middle East, and southern Thailand, near the Malaysian border. Even in the Philippines, a country with a largely Catholic population, there is a high demand for halal beef in the southwestern part of the country.
Halal beef products are also gaining popularity in China. Joel Haggard, Senior Vice President (Asia and Pacific Region, USMEF), believes that the halal beef business in China is growing steadily.
Statistics from the China Islamic Association show that global halal food and commodity trade is at least $2.1 trillion, and is growing at least 20% annually. China's halal trade is also growing at 10% annually, with annual halal food trade reaching $2.1 billion. China's halal market is attracting considerable attention. Ten of China's major ethnic minorities, totaling approximately 200 million people, are Muslim. The Hui are the largest ethnic minority in the country. China has also attracted the attention of Thailand.
