Indonesia to establish a halal hub
2025-05-15
JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesia will soon have a halal hub comprising a halal port and a halal zone, Jakarta's Financial Support and Industry Director PSR said here on Thursday.
"The market for halal products in Indonesia is very large and there is a great demand for halal products in Indonesia and around the world because of the Muslim lifestyle," Sitta said at the World Islamic Economic Forum held in Jakarta from August 2 to 4.
Sitta said the Halal Hub will ensure that Halal lifestyle products including food, clothing, cosmetics and medicines imported and exported from Indonesia will adhere to Halal standards.
The halal hub will be built at the Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta by state-owned port operator Pelindo II, while a halal area will be set up in Rawamangun to inspect products.
“So when some products like meat require special handling, they are separated from other products upon arrival at the port. In addition, they are immediately taken to the halal area for further inspection,” Sitta explained.
New halal areas will be added elsewhere soon, but they will have to meet strict standards, such as having clean water and cold storage.
“We will train people working in the halal area to ensure that every product follows the same standards,” Sitta said.
It commented that the operation of the Indonesian Halal Hub will be carried out by electronic technology to inspect products so that they can be provided to consumers in a timely manner.
“This procedure will shorten the goods delivery chain and ensure that the products are received in better condition, which is also one of the halal requirements,” she said.
Halal areas should be located close to equipment and facilities that facilitate transportation, such as high-speed rail.
“For example, after arriving in Tangjung Priok, goods will go directly to the halal area and then be transported directly to Surabaya by train,” she added.
Although each country has different halal inspection standards, Sitta hopes that the existence of a halal hub will help Indonesia play an important role in the world.
