Producing Halal gelatin is not complicated

2025-05-15
Gelatin is everywhere: in food, medicine, cosmetics, and industrial products.
Yet, producing halal gelatin isn't complicated. Millions of Muslim women make it in their kitchens every day. They boil halal-slaughtered meat, and when it's done, the gelatin seeps into the food's juices. It's incredibly simple.

The same process applies to industrial production. All you need is halal ingredients, heat, and water. That's all. The key point is that the ingredients must be obtained only from halal sources.

Let's explain the raw materials: All living things are largely made up of protein. Proteins are composed of different amino acids. Different amounts and compositions of amino acids form different protein groups. The protein group that can form gelatin is called collagen.

When this protein comes into contact with hot water, it hydrolyzes, losing its molecular bonds and leaching into the water. When the water is boiled away, the remaining substance is gelatin.

To reduce costs, gelatin is usually made from animal bones and skins.

Of course, the industry uses large tanks of 100 or 150 tons to produce gelatin. The raw materials are actually waste materials, such as skins and bones, some of which come from slaughterhouses and leather processing factories.

The process involves multiple stages: heating, soaking, evaporation, drying, and grinding. As mentioned above, the most important issue is ensuring that all ingredients must be from halal sources. This means that ingredients cannot come from illegal animals, such as pork, and all parts must come from animals slaughtered according to halal principles and regulations.
